DHAKA, July 18, 2025 (Khondaker Abdul Motin, Editor) — Bangladesh and the United Nations Human Rights Office have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a UN human rights mission in the country, aimed at promoting and protecting human rights.

The agreement was signed by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, according to a statement released from the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva.

The statement noted that since August last year, the UN Human Rights Office has stepped up its engagement with Bangladesh, working closely with different stakeholders on human rights reforms and conducting a detailed investigation into the deadly crackdown on mass protests.

“This agreement sends a strong signal of Bangladesh’s commitment to human rights as a key part of its national transition,” said Türk.

The new mission will help support the implementation of the recommendations outlined in the UN's fact-finding report. It will also allow the UN to engage directly with the government, civil society, and other actors in Bangladesh, offering expert advice and assistance on critical reforms.

According to the statement, the mission will provide training and technical support to government authorities in various areas related to human rights. It will also focus on capacity-building for both government institutions and civil society groups to help Bangladesh fulfill its national and international human rights obligations.
